The Evolution of Gaming

Gaming has been a part of our world as long as most of us can remember. For some, it has been around all our lives, while others lived through the uprising of this phenomenon. Technology has played a significant role in the creation of every gaming console that has been around to this day. The use of technology has made a considerable impact on so many things, not just on gaming. Although this can be an overstatement, let us rewind and explore how video gaming came to life.

1950’s-1970’s

The prosperous rise of the first-ever video game, Tennis for Two, was invented in 1958 for the pure joy of entertainment. This game consisted of a bulky metal controller with only two buttons where both players bounced a spot of light on each side of the net until one player won a match, similar to tennis.

As technological innovations grew, so did the video game industry. Later during the early ’70s, arcade video game machines were brought up with the inclusion of coin-slots. This addition was the first time any video game was publicly accessible to anyone with a hold of a few loose change in their pockets.

1980’s

In the 1980s, major consoles were beginning their creation, and classic games like Mario Bros, Pac-man, and Tetris were on the rise. Two major consoles were introduced early in this decade, Commodore 69 home computer and the Nintendo Entertainment System (NES). The games involving these consoles had more advanced technology, such as innovative graphics and characters designed for every game. Additionally, when the Gameboy released at the end of the 80’s it changed the revolution of gaming even more.

1990’s

The growth in video games did not stop here. Three-dimensional capabilities brought gaming to a whole new level, immersing gamers into what seemed like virtual reality. In 1994, the launch of the PlayStation was born into stores and was the lead console against competitors. The PlayStation had a disc player for games, unbelievable 3D and audio abilities as well as the legendary geometric symbols designed on the buttons. Numerous popular games were surrounding the industry in the 90’s such as Tomb Raider, Kirby, Pokémon Red and Blue, and more.

2000’s

Groundbreaking games were finally being played online. More realistic features were drawn in, and simulated opponents interacted differently in every gaming scenario. The beginning of open-world games like Sims, Grand Theft Auto, and Super Mario Galaxy was established, giving gamers the chance to discover and have control over these fictional worlds. The Xbox One released a wide range of games that encaptured the latest technology while the Xbox Live later came out, becoming a massive community for gamers. This console took over Nintendo’s classic GameCube in which we all grew up to love.

2010’s

Various amount of independent gaming studios had evolved during the last decade intended for multiple different platforms, whether it be online, on mobile phones, tablets, and consoles. This has allowed gamers to play anywhere, at any time with virtually any opponent. Not only were children and teenagers playing, but an older demographic was joining. More modern versions of the PlayStation and Xbox, including the invention of the Wii, dominated the industry.

2020’s

Are you starting to wonder what the video game industry will look like in 5, 10 years from now? Or how can technology help further advance video games even more? Even though it may seem that we have caught up with technology as far as gaming, we may not know what the future holds for this billion-dollar industry. But one thing is for sure, virtual reality can only improve with the use of better graphics, audio, and lightweight devices. Enhanced AR and VR features will be immersing more video gamers to play their favorite games on any platform.
